Adeleke’s Victory Is a Resounding Vote of Confidence, NANS Southwest Says

OSOGBO, OSUN STATE — The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has congratulated the Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, on his victory in the August 15, 2026 governorship election.

In a statement signed by the Coordinator of NANS Southwest Zone D, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode (BILLIONCODES), the association described the governor’s victory as a significant expression of confidence by the people of Osun State.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Adeleke the winner after he secured 511,067 votes, defeating his closest challenger who polled 444,815 votes.

NANS Southwest said the outcome was particularly significant to the Nigerian student community, noting that students and young people across major tertiary institution communities participated actively in the electoral process.

The association listed student communities around Obafemi Awolowo University, Osun State University, University of Ilesa, Osun State College of Health Technology, Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun State College of Education, Ila-Orangun, and Federal College of Education, Iwo, among areas where students participated in the election.

According to the statement, NANS Southwest had, before the election, consistently encouraged students to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards, participate peacefully and make informed choices at the polls.

The association also commended student leaders, Students’ Union Government officials, comrades and grassroots mobilisers who contributed to voter sensitisation across the state.

NANS Southwest maintained that its engagement with government had remained issue-based, noting that it had criticised government policies when students were affected and acknowledged positive developments where necessary.

The association also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what it described as his democratic posture before and during the election.

It recalled the President’s directive to security agencies to protect voters and electoral officials and ensure that the election reflected the will of the people.

NANS Southwest equally commended INEC, security agencies, election observers, civil society organisations, journalists and other stakeholders who contributed to the conclusion of the electoral process.

However, the student body said the governor’s renewed mandate must now translate into greater attention to the needs of students and young people.

It called for increased investment in tertiary education, improved infrastructure, functional healthcare facilities, enhanced campus security, transportation interventions, bursaries and scholarships, entrepreneurship programmes and graduate employment opportunities.

“This second mandate must define your legacy,” the association said while congratulating the governor.

NANS Southwest further maintained that the participation of Nigerian students demonstrated that the student constituency remains an important political and developmental force in the state.

The association urged Governor Adeleke to make student welfare a major component of his administration’s renewed agenda.
