The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has congratulated Hon. Aremo Adekunle Adegboyega Alao on his appointment as Chairman of the Osun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).
In a congratulatory statement signed by the Coordinator of NANS Southwest Zone D, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, popularly known as BILLIONCODES, the association described the appointment as significant to the future of education in Osun State.
NANS Southwest noted that the quality of tertiary education is closely connected to the foundation students receive at the primary and junior secondary school levels.
According to the association, the pupils currently in basic education will eventually become students of universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
It therefore urged the new SUBEB Chairman to approach the appointment with a strong commitment to improving the standard of public basic education across the state.
Among the areas highlighted by NANS Southwest are the rehabilitation of dilapidated classrooms, provision of desks and furniture, functional toilets, potable water, instructional materials and safe learning environments.
The student body also called for greater attention to teachers' welfare and professional development.
It said properly trained and motivated teachers remain essential to achieving sustainable improvement in learning outcomes.
NANS Southwest further urged the new SUBEB leadership to strengthen digital education in public schools by providing functional ICT facilities, digital literacy programmes and modern teaching resources.
The association also raised concern over children who remain outside the formal education system.
It called for stronger collaboration between SUBEB, communities, parents, traditional institutions and other stakeholders to identify out-of-school children and address the factors responsible for their exclusion.
NANS Southwest also emphasised transparency in the implementation of education projects.
The association said government investment in basic education must produce visible improvements that communities can identify and benefit from.
While congratulating Alao, NANS Southwest offered the support of the Nigerian student constituency to initiatives genuinely aimed at improving education and expanding access.
The association expressed hope that the new SUBEB leadership would use the opportunity to strengthen the educational foundation upon which the future of Osun State rests.
