EAUED SUG Poll: NANS Southwest Demands Suspension, Warns Against Disenfranchisement

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has demanded the immediate suspension of the Students’ Union Government election at Emmanuel Alayande University of Education (EAUED), Oyo, over concerns that the electoral arrangement may disadvantage a section of the student population.

The Coordinator of NANS Southwest Zone D, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode (BILLIONCODES), made the position known in a statement dated August 22, 2026.

NANS said the university's students were reportedly informed that electronic voting would commence at 10:00 a.m. and close at 2:00 p.m.

The association, however, said reports reaching its office indicated that voting did not commence at the announced time.

The development became more concerning, according to NANS, because examinations were taking place within the same period.

Electoral fairness questioned

NANS Southwest argued that students sitting examinations during the voting window could be denied the same opportunity to vote enjoyed by students who were not in examination halls.

The association described the situation as a fundamental fairness concern.

It therefore demanded that the electoral exercise be suspended and a fresh date announced.

According to NANS, the new voting period should be scheduled at a time when students are not engaged in examinations or other major academic activities.

The association maintained that its intervention was not influenced by the identity or political affiliation of any candidate.

“Our interest is credible student representation”

NANS said its primary concern was ensuring that the eventual winner of the election represents the genuine choice of EAUED students.

The association warned that no university official, electoral committee member, student leader or external actor should create circumstances capable of conferring an unfair advantage on any candidate.

NANS also called on the Oyo State Government to urgently examine the situation.

The association specifically mentioned Governor Seyi Makinde, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs.

NANS demands transparency in e-voting

Another area of concern highlighted by the student body was the administration of the electronic voting platform.

NANS urged the electoral committee to provide adequate assurances that the system is secure, transparent and accessible to all eligible students.

The association also disclosed that it had received an allegation concerning the possible partisan involvement of an officer of NANS Southwest.

Comrade Adeyemo said evidence had been requested and that no individual would be condemned solely on the basis of an allegation.

He nevertheless reiterated that NANS Southwest officers are expected to maintain neutrality in campus elections.

The association called on the university management and electoral committee to suspend the process and engage candidates and stakeholders on a fresh electoral timetable.

It further urged security agencies to protect students and maintain strict neutrality throughout the process.
