NANS Southwest to Storm UNIOSUN on Monday Over Escalating Welfare, Healthcare Crisis
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has announced that its leadership will visit Osun State University (UNIOSUN) on Monday, June 29, over what it described as escalating concerns surrounding student welfare, emergency healthcare services, and the circumstances that followed the death of a final-year law student, Miss Osunlakin Grace.
In a statement signed by the Southwest Zonal Coordinator, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode (Billion Codes), NANS said its engagement with the university has expanded beyond the immediate investigation into the student's death to address broader welfare concerns affecting students across the institution.
The association disclosed that despite the university's decision to commence an internal investigation and temporarily close the Ifetedo Campus, it has continued to receive complaints from students regarding healthcare service delivery, emergency response systems, welfare conditions, and the implementation of the campus closure.
NANS also expressed concern over reports alleging that students were directed to vacate the campus within a limited timeframe despite transportation challenges in Ifetedo, as well as allegations that some student leaders were threatened during the evacuation process.
According to the association, these issues will be presented to the university management during Monday's engagement, where it intends to seek explanations and advocate practical reforms aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery, emergency preparedness, student welfare, and institutional response mechanisms.
The student body emphasized that its visit is intended to facilitate constructive dialogue with the university management and contribute to lasting solutions that improve the welfare and safety of students.
While reiterating that the engagement is not intended to disrupt academic activities or undermine the university's internal investigation, NANS maintained that student welfare remains non-negotiable and pledged to continue advocating for meaningful reforms until the concerns raised by students are adequately addressed.
The association further urged students to remain peaceful and law-abiding, expressing confidence that sustained dialogue and collaboration with the university authorities would produce outcomes that strengthen student welfare, healthcare services, and emergency response systems across the institution.
