NANS Southwest Secures Major Welfare Commitments from UNIOSUN Management
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, under the leadership of the Coordinator, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode (BILLIONCODES), has recorded a major breakthrough in student welfare following a high-level engagement with the management of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Odunayo Clement Adeboye.
The meeting was convened in response to the unfortunate death of the late Osunlakin Grace and other pressing welfare concerns affecting students across the university's campuses. During the engagement, the NANS Coordinator reaffirmed that the safety, welfare, and well-being of students remain a top priority for the association, while emphasizing that NANS will continue to pursue dialogue-based solutions without compromising on student interests.
In his response, the Vice-Chancellor appreciated NANS Southwest for its solidarity and condolence visit, describing the death of the student as painful and deeply regrettable. He assured the delegation that the university is committed to taking practical steps to prevent a recurrence and improve healthcare delivery across all campuses.
Among the major resolutions announced by the university management are:
- Establishment of another health centre at the Ifetedo Campus.
- Strengthening and rehabilitation of health facilities across all campuses.
- 24-hour operation of all medical centres within the university.
- Provision of solar-powered electricity in all health centres.
- Availability of functional ambulances for emergency response.
- Recruitment of qualified doctors and nurses for the university's health facilities.
The Students' Union President, Comrade Oremokun Shedrack Imoleayo, formally presented students' demands, including the relocation of the Ifetedo Campus health centre, review of TISHIP and HMO code generation processes, reopening of the Welfare Director's portal, repair of the university ambulance, and provision of essential medical equipment such as a nebulizer machine.
In response, the Vice-Chancellor assured the students that management would implement virtually all requests within its administrative powers. He clarified that the request for improved healthcare facilities in surrounding communities falls under the jurisdiction of the Osun State Government or the Federal Government.
To ensure accountability and long-term improvement, the university also constituted a University Committee on Health Services, with student representatives from all campuses and relevant university officials. The committee has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the late Osunlakin Grace, review the issues that led to the students' protest, assess healthcare services across the institution, and submit its report within one week from June 29, 2026.
In a further development, the Vice-Chancellor announced the immediate reopening of the Welfare Director's portal. He also stated that students are expected to resume academic activities within the next two weeks, as the university will use the period to carry out fumigation of hostels and other environmental sanitation measures.
Speaking at the close of the meeting, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode commended the university management for its openness and commitment to student welfare, while assuring that NANS Southwest will closely monitor the implementation of all resolutions reached.
